105 million transactions recorded on the WHSD in 2021

Northern Capital Highway Ltd's operating services summarise the year's key traffic and transponder distribution figures.

Eight times from Earth to Sun on the WHSD
Traffic flow in 2021 is recorded as 17% higher than in 2020 and almost 10% higher than in the pre-covid year 2019. This suggests that traffic not only showed a significant increase from 2020, when coronavirus restrictions were most severe, but also returned to the steady evolutionary growth seen before the pandemic.

Four out of ten cars in St Petersburg have a WHSD transponder
The number of WHSD transponders in cars of citizens also continued to grow actively in 2021, almost 115 thousand devices were sold in 12 months. Altogether, according to analytical service calculations, four out of ten St. Petersburg cars are equipped with a Western High-Speed Diameter on-board device. The total number of transponders in circulation is about 900 thousand units.

Most popular route and record-breaking day
The daily traffic record was updated on September 10, 2021, when 398.5 thousand transactions were recorded on the WHSD. Fridays in the first half of September are traditionally record-breaking. As citizens return from holiday, school and university students resume their studies, the weather is still a powerful motivation for mass out-of-town trips.
